Menu to Pictures of Guilin and Li River Sites
Guilin, a city located in the southernmost part of China in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region which shares a border with Vietnam, is the place that so many of the "Chinese Paintings" of fog-shrouded vertical hills come from. Called (locally) "The Most Beautiful Place in the World" enjoys a thriving foriegn tourist trade, and much of it deservedly. It is a smaller city, less than 1.5 million, but there are several absolutely lovely, and one historically impressive, sites worth visiting. The Li river runs through the City, and the river is the mainstream of commerce and the tourist trade. This Region has many ethnic minorities in residence and they can become part of an itinerary that would be colorful and of great interest to those so inclined. We saw evidence of the various cultures, but did not pursue them specifically. Overall lovely and very relaxing compared to the usual tourist sites.
