This is the Polynesian"Chestnut Tree" or Mape. The trunk/root complex grows in fanning wings, and is often covered with green moss. It provides a tasty fruit like a chestnut.
Historically, the natives would use the wings of the trunk as a drum, signaling nearby villages or clans. Hitting it with a rock produces a sharp, cracking noise of great volume, causing echoes throughout the canyons.
