The Hubei Museum houses a collection of over 7,000 artifacts from the tomb of the Marquis of Zeng, whose tomb (Zenghouyi Tomb) dates from about 450 BC.
The museum's centerpiece is a set of 64 bells of different sizes and varying shapes; some play two notes depending on how struck. The bells play in a seven-note scale. YoYo Ma is one of the few people ever invited to play the original set of bells in this museum. Even the wooden suspension beam for the bells was in perfect condition as it had been buried under wet sand without any oxygen such that nothing deteriorated.
This is a bronze figure of a crane with deer antlers. The crane represents longevity, the deer wealth and filial piety, both auspicious symbols in Chinese culture. This exotic bronze combination of the two was certainly to enhance the merit and life of the Marquis, Mr. Li.
