Beijing - A Smaller Alley in an Old Neighborhood

This is an "inner" alley, the access between courtyards and between the larger alleys where bicycles and some motorized vehicles traverse. We walked through several of these passageways, and visited a couple of the houses and people living in them.

In these spaces we saw everything associated with life in fairly primitive housing situations. The primitive was side-by-side with the TV set, stereo, VCR and computer. Though the walls were often mud and brick, there was often beautiful art hanging in the rooms. We saw several very pretty common spaces with miniature gardens and what has become known as "bonsai" trees, and some buddhist alters.

The services were crude, witness the electrical box in the picture, but it all seemed to work and was better than other places we saw.
