Beijing - Drum Tower (Gu Lou)

This is the Gu Lou, or Drum Tower, of old Beijing. In the top are the remains of several very old drums, one being extremely large. These were the "Big Ben" of old Beijing and served as the time reminder for the City. The actual time was kept by those manning the tower using a water-clock. Just down an alley is the "Zhong Lou" or Bell Tower. Between them they kept the rhythm of old Beijing.

The Drum Tower was built in 1420. The Bell Tower burnt down and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside the Drum Tower are steps leading up to the open loft where the remaining drums are kept. These steps are extremely steep and tall, and though getting up is strenuous work, going down its so steep that one tends to lose one's balance.
