This is a view of the Hall of the Supreme Harmony. As you can see, it was hardly big enough for the one Emperor's throne, which is in the central space. It rest atop a three-tiered marble terrace with both stairs and a ramp for access. It was a requirement that the temple be higher than anything nearby to show the Emperor's power. The courtyard in front is 30,000 square meters and will hold thousands of worshippers. This is the largest wooden temple remaining in China.
There are no trees in the courtyard, this was so there would be nothing taller than the seated Emperor as well as no hiding places for those wishing to do harm to the Emperor or other officials. Besides, the Emperor would be warm in winter and in the cooler shade in summer, what else mattered?
