Portugal - Tomar - 2005
After a day lolling around Nazare and Sitio, we had to do serious touristing. We took a day trip to Tomar to visit the Convento de Cristo. The monastery was founded in 1160 by the Knight’s Templar and was one of their main seats of power for hundreds of years until disbanded in 1314 only to reappear as the Order of Christ which went on to use it’s great wealth to fund such adventures as those of Henry the Navigator. The kings didn’t like the power of the Knights, but certainly wanted their wealth. It’s good to be king.
