This is a picture of one of the inner courtyards in the temple complex. I found the roofing materials interesting for the lower roofs that were exposed here. Also, the integration with the new which is so typical around Shanghai, is obvious with the adjoining modern building that forms part of this complex on the left.
This was, I believe, part of the living quarters for the monks of the temple. I would imagine that these rooms were cooler than most places during the Shanghai summers.
For a country that was, at one time, strongly Buddhist (second only to "Confucianism", a philosopher) there is precious little room for worship anymore. I wonder if there is balance between those that want to remain practicing Buddhists and places to worship; or if there is much more demand than space.
