Suzhou - 'Master of the Nets' Garden 1
This garden named 'The Master of the Nets' is the smallest formal public garden in Suzhou, but is considered to be the superior of the others combined. It was originally built in the 12th century, and subsequently abandoned for many years. It was restored in the 18th century by a retired official, who named it as it is today. There are several stories to account for the name, but the mystery is unknown for sure. Miniatures of this garden have been made and presented in international museum's around the world. In so small a place, the actual buildings are quite good sized, but nothing appears out of place or overwhelming. This was extremely peaceful and contemplative. This and other of the better gardens would be worth a focused tour in themselves, especially for those looking for meditative experiences more than the frantic life of the chinese cities. Part of the buildings is used for a local woodblock artists cooperative. There are fantastic examples of Ming furniture and art in the buildings.
