Suzhou - Grand Canal Long Barge

This is the last picture along the Grand Canal. I'm just fascinated with the commercial use of the waterways having grown up in a port city. As you can see, this is not a large waterway, yet this raft is perhaps 15 or more full-sized barges in length, towed by a single tugboat, with perhaps another in the rear for guidance. More risk is tolerated here than I normally see in similar situations back home. The traffic was mostly coal, cement building materials, and forest products from raw trees down to finished dimension lumber and sheet goods. There were of course other items in barges, but these three categories were the majority. Taking a boat along the canals is a wonderful way to see some of the countryside between those cities you might want to visit and to which there is clear water passage.
