Nanjing - Sun Yatsen Mausoleum (Zhongshan Ling)
Another example of China's large-scale planning and building. This is the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yatsen, who may be thought of as the 'George Washington' of China. He is recognized by both the current Communist as well as the former Kuomintang (now ruling the island of Taiwan, originated by Chiang Kai-Shek) governments as the founder of modern China. This is another perennial favorite tourist site of the Chinese, and it is always crowded. This mausoleum was planned and built beginning in 1930, a year after Dr. Sun's death in Beijing. It was his wish to be laid to rest in Nanjing.
