Nanjing - Grand Canal Scene 1
This is shot from a bridge over the Grand Canal, and the large building to the right is the back of a restaurant; the floats in the water define enclosures for live fish that are served therein. The cute little 'car-like' floating devices are pedal-boats that one rents to pedal up and down the canal for fun.
Also in Nanjing (but no pictures) we visited the 'Rape of Nanjing Memorial'. This is a well done war memorial, with gruesome displays including pictures, memos, actual grave diggings, etc., as a reminder of what was perhaps the most brutal butchery in modern warfare. Up to 400,000 men, women and children were slaughtered in a period of a few months in 1937-38, in this one city. At least 20,000 women from 11 to 76 were brutally raped in the first month alone, with most being subsequently killed. It is hoped that this reminder will help all countries avoid such bestial behavior in the future.
