Here is another detail view of the tile-work found throughout China on the important traditional buildings. This view, of one of the buildings within the Temple of Heaven grounds, shows several of the many specialty tiles used in the decoration of a roof. Many "gargoyle-like" pieces on corners, posts, beams and points; the three-dimensional field tiles used to cover the expanses of the roof, tile inlays to decorate the roof beam ends, the ridge tiles, etc.
Several of the figurine style tiles are obviously related to the old Tang Dynasty glazed figurines that have been excavated and are now on display around the world. Imitation is not looked at with the same emotion as in the West; and good quality work is well respected if it provides continuity to the ancestors and cultural history.
