Beijing - 13 Ming Tombs Gate

Near Beijing is the burial places for 13 of the 16Ming Emporers. This is a large site encompassing 40 square kilometers of land. It is entered through the gate above, and then a walk down a path guarded by pairs of stone animals (next). Three of the 13 tombs were reconstructed when we were there, and though the structure of the one we visited was significant, it was basically an elegant stone hole in the ground. It was empty of contents, those having been stolen many years ago.

This is a very popular tourist area and can be very crowded, but it is very peaceful also and should not be missed. There are lovely squares and trees after you have run the gauntlet of parking lots and hawkers. There is a beautiful overlook building providing a panoramic view of the rolling hills.
