Start of a race for the kids. These gymkanas were huge events in this area; people flew into them in their small planes from hundreds of miles away. The distances here are so vast that small planes are the only sensible means of transportation between stations.

Once, we went out to one of the large sheep stations, Giralia Station, about 75 miles out into the outback. You can just see the buildings comprising the station in the center. I burned out a piston on my motorcycle on this trip through the 118 degree heat. There was a 'gymkana', or local version of 'rodeo' for the various station owners & their kids.

There they go!!! Around the stretch. The rules were flexible and fun was had by all in attendance. More beer was sold and conpsumed than could be believed. Good times!!!

Above left is the entrance to Canarvon Satellite Tracking Station, a US/Australian joint operation about 200 miles south of Exmouth that we were not allowed entry into.

Above Right is the Sydney Opera house, under construction, circa 1970.

Right is the 'abo' bar. In 1970, life was very different for the aboriginal peoples than the whites; and may still be today. The white's bar was comfortable, shaded and with tables and chairs.

Giralia is still in operation, though today it is a 'dude ranch' sort of affair with rooms, restaurant and campsites for the tourists.
