Catalina 1994, Our First Trip...

In March, 1994, we joined Alan and Alice in San Diego, then drove to Long Beach and took the ferry to Catalina. We were joined by friends Jim and Gail, and several others. Alan, Alice, Jim and Gail have been attending the Catalina Marathon for many years and we have joined them occasionally since 1994. Here we are on the beach, while touring the Island with Alan's fisherman friend John (far right). He lives there and has a pass to drive outside of the town of Catalina. Catalina is a game reserve outside of the town and is open to permitted hikers only.

A view of the harbor and the only town on the island, Avalon. Catalina is so small unless you can get a pass to go into the "back country", It is the perfect place to do nothing but relax, enjoy a meal and drink, read, sun and watch people.

Jim and Gail, who have been coming to Catalina for the marathon weekend for years, always rent the same apartment. Here we all are up on the deck of the roof-top of their apartment. They always have the "great fish dinner" and party the night of the race. What a great time they provide for all their friends.

This year we were joined by Gil. Above with Alice and me, to the right with Alice and Bron. It was good to see Gil, who is an old friend, married Pat before she died to adopt Danny, and raised him so very well. Danny is now in Harvard studying pre-med. Quite the dad.

To the right is Alice, with some of the protected game on Catalina. The Wrigley family, of gum fame, owned the island; then donated it to California for a tax deduction. They had imported several species of game for their amusement. I'm not sure getting this close to bison is a good idea.
