Siem Reap - Preah Rup - 2006

This is a view down towards the East from the second level of Preah Rup (Turning of the Body).  Preah Rup is thought to have been a crematorium where the ashes were ritualistically arranged to be aligned with the cardinal points as ritual for entering heaven.

The third terrace of this shrine provides a wonderful view across the plains where once there had been a large reservoir for growing rice in the off-seasons as well as to help prevent flooding.

Much of this site had been constructed of brick and, as can be seen, is in a state of disrepair.  The walls and platforms are of laterite, a volcanic rock less durable than sandstone but more than brick.

There are sandstone sitting lions to the side of each set of steps leading up from the ground to the top level of the site.

These 3-level Hindu sites represented Mount Meru, which is heaven.  There is always a staircase to bridge from the earth to the Mountain, showing a path for worshippers to ascend to heaven.
