Siem Reap - Angkor Wat - 2006

Here we are approaching the East gate of Angkor Wat.  Behind us is one wall, not in its entirety, of the basic structure.  There are five towers rising from the third level of the buildings.  The whole of it is just over 1,025m E to W, and 800m N to S; nearly 1 sq km.  If you include the 90m moat which surrounds the central structure, it is 1.5km by 1.3km, or just under 2 sq km.  The first sight of this huge structure, reported to be the largest religious structure in the world, it is overpowering and exceeds whatever you can imagine.  This is one of those cases where the currently overworked word “awesome” truly applies.
