This is the Ngo Mon Gate, entrance to the Imperial Enclosure, a “Citadel within the Citadel”.
Above the brick and stone gate is the Belvedere of the Five Phoenixes where the emperor would appear for important occasions.
It was here on August 30, 1945 that Emperor Bao Dai ended the Nguyen Dynasty by abdicating to the Ho Chi Minh Provisional Revolutionary Government.
