At another site in Authaya, Wat Phra Mahathat, less restored than Wat Chai Mongkhon, but more awe-inspiring for its size and complexity. This site was destroyed by siege from the Burmese in 1767. All Buddha images were broken into pieces, many of which lay in a courtyard still. One interesting Buddha-head was set in the roots of a Banyon tree and is now completely locked into the roots and shows signs of current worship. Notice the tall corn-shaped pagoda in the background.
